A kidney stone is a collection of crystals that separate from the urine within the urinary tract. It is one of the most painful urological disorders and the most common of the urinary tract disorders. Human beings produce chemicals in their urine to prevent the formation of these crystals, unfortunately for some, these chemicals are either not produced or they do not work. They are more common in men than in women. They are named according to their location in the urinary tract. However, most pass out of the body on their own without requiring treatment.

Due to the excruciating pain involved, it makes it impossible for one to function normaly in daily life. The pain is sudden and can continue for a very long time until the stone is able to pass on its own, or through the aid of drugs or surgery. Usually they are accompanied by no symptoms. The first sign of trouble happens when it moves in the urinary tract and blocks the flow of urine. This normally causes the urine to change color and turn pink. Other problems associated with this condition include; a burning sensation when urinating, blood in the urine, fever and chills.

When suffering from diseases such as gout, you are more prone to getting kidney stones. You are also more susceptible to the disease when taking medication like diuretics. The relation to other diseases and medication can make life unbearable. This is because, stones add on already existing problems and diseases. In addition, its location in the urinary tract can lead to malfunctions in the body.

As with all diseases, preventive measures are the best way to go. Measures to prevent kidney stones include;

• Drinking plenty of fluids especially water. This will help you pass urine more often and as a result help in flushing out your system.

• Eating less or totally avoiding some foods such as, chocolate, sweet potatoes, spinach, wheat germ or peanuts. You should also eat more of foods such as green pepper, liver, strawberries, celery and grapes.

• Regular exercise and movement.

Surgery might be considered as an option for kidney stones in cases where they are too large to pass on their own or they have grown bigger since the last x-ray was done. It could also be done where they are causing regular urinary tract infections or damage to the kidney.
