Anorexia is a disease that affects people who have poor self and body image. It is an eating disorder which leads one starve so that they do not gain weight. Anorexics use extreme methods to ensure that they get as thin as is humanly possible. They will eat very small portions of food when they have to eat. These portions are usually inadequate for providing all the nutrients that the body requires. Eating usually causes them to suffer from guilt resulting in starving. This is a serious condition which needs proper intervention as it results in the total disruption of ones life. In some cases, an anorexic also suffers from bulimia, which makes someone purge after eating.

Despite their unreasonable eating habits, anorexics also exercise excessively. In addition, they use laxatives and diet pills in order to lose weight. There is also a high likelihood of abusing drugs, especially cigarettes and alcohol Due to these excesses. An anorexic may lose weight dramatically bringing about many diseases and medical complications for them. These complications and diseases could eventually result in death. Examples include, anemia, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, raising the risk of heart attacks, hormonal imbalances or stomach and bone complications.

It is possible to get treatment for anorexia and fully recover. However, the anorexic first needs to accept that they have a problem. In some cases, they can be forced to go for treatment when their condition becomes too serious and they are still in denial. The first thing that needs to be done is to help them gain weight and also to change their eating habits. For most patients this requires hospitalization so that they can be fed through tubes as they will most likely not agree to feed on their own.

Since anorexia is a mental problem which usually results in distorted thinking, most of these patients need to be treated by a psychologist or a psychiatrist. They need to be made to understand what constitutes normal behavior and what does not. Since the disease normally occurs in adolescents facing puberty, they need to be given proper information on health issues. Parents and guardians also need to check the kind of role models the teenagers have such as models and gymnasts who might contribute to the problem. However, signs of anorexia need addressed immediately before the condition becomes life threatening.
